Companies that have been hurrying to get items into shops and distribution facilities before the end of the year holidays are now taking a longer perspective on when the supply chain bottleneck will ultimately break.
For merchants and manufacturers planning capital expenditures, buying, and production plans for the next year, this is a critical issue. Corporate leaders’ comments on recent quarterly earnings calls, as well as conversations with logistics experts, imply that relief expectations are progressively being pushed out to 2022 and beyond.

Supply-chain restrictions were cited by a large percentage of organizations as a revenue stumbling block. There are mounting indicators that challenges including port congestion, truck driver shortages, supplier delivery delays, and increased raw material and component prices, such as semiconductors, are harming the larger economy.
Clorox Co., Majestic Steel USA, A.O. Smith Corp., and apparel retailer Under Armour Inc. are implementing operations and sourcing changes that will last beyond the current bottlenecks, indicating that stopgap measures in response to raw materials shortages and transportation bottlenecks are being embedded into ongoing operations.
“We believe that supply chain restrictions will persist in the market through the second half of calendar year 2022,” Tarek A. Robbiati, finance chief at information technology business Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co., said during an investor briefing on Oct. 28.
Under Armour claims that their order book for spring and summer 2022 has shrunk. During an earnings call Tuesday, David Bergman, Under Armour’s chief financial officer, stated, “We are taking safeguards to manage some of the volatility and expected business disruptions in the first half of 2022.”
Suppliers of consumer products have cut product lines to streamline production and keep items moving, and they are diversifying their raw material sources. Larger industrial manufacturers are resetting assembly lines to make them more resistant to outages like those that have afflicted the car industry, where some businesses have said that the semiconductor shortage would continue to impair output until 2022.
During a Monday investor conference, Hau Thai-Tang, Ford’s chief product platform and operations officer, said the company is “planning for much more interchangeability, fungibility,” and ensuring it has numerous suppliers for components.
According to logistics experts, the interwoven structure of supply networks means that resuming the continuous flow of commodities across the global economy would take time.
“We haven’t seen any respite until the end of the calendar year 2022,” said Sarah Banks, global head for freight and logistics at consultancy Accenture PLC. “However, given the ongoing challenges in supply chains, it’s unclear whether that’s still doable.” There are some encouraging signals, but how long we will remain in this condition is still unknown.”

Untangling the supply-chain snarls, she added, would rely in part on resolving Covid-19’s influence on the economy and activities from factories to port docks.
Ms. Banks said, “There are deeper economic concerns that govern supply and demand.” “We won’t know what supply chains look like until it becomes clear how we live our lives with Covid,” she said.
Supply chain operations may be back to normal by the autumn of next year, according to Lisa Ellram, a professor of supply chain management at the Miami University Farmer School of Business in Oxford, Ohio. “I do believe Covid is the major wild card,” she added, citing the possibility for shutdowns and other pandemic effects.
According to supply chain operators, the backlog will persist until enough staff are available for transportation, port, and warehousing operations.
On the company’s third-quarter results call last week, Bob Biesterfeld, CEO of C.H. Robinson Worldwide Inc., the biggest U.S. freight broker, said, “I won’t attempt to prognosticate when and how this ends, but I do think it’s going to stretch for quite some time.”
