Monark is a school simulation game that lets players create their own personalized avatar and send it to an insane asylum where they must survive the twisted world of Monark. The game will be available on Steam in early 2022, but pre-orders are now open for those who want to get their hands on the game before its release.
Monark will be released for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and PS5, and PC on February 22 in North America and Europe, according to NIS America. While FuRyu’s school narrative may seem to be Persona-lite — which is understandable given that it was created by former Shin Megami Tensei developers — there are a few significant distinctions that set Monark apart.
During a recent NIS America event, I got a brief peek of Monark’s fighting and exploration, and although the larger plot beats remain a secret for the time being, I did receive a basic sense of what to expect.
The NISA section took place in the midst of a lunacy phase, in which the protagonist dives into the fog of madness to cope with the warped ego infecting the school and people inside it.
You’re joined by one friend who’s purpose is to counteract the ego’s delusions, but they also assist you in battle.
Monark’s combat seems to be a more complex and tactical system based on space and mobility. Attack ranges are controlled by kind and character placement, but you’re also in charge of a slew of Fiends in addition to the protagonist and their sidekick.
Monark has lofty goals and the potential to tell an intriguing narrative about human motives, but we’ll have to wait a little longer to see how well it lands.
