LOS ANGELES, Calif. (CBSLA) – The Los Angeles Dodgers signed veteran left-hander Danny Duffy to a one-year deal on Thursday, bolstering their pitching staff.
A team option for the 2023 season is also included in the agreement.

Duffy was a member of the Dodgers’ 40-man roster last season, after being acquired from the Kansas City Royals at the trade deadline. He never played for the Boys in Blue, though, owing to a pre-existing ailment that kept him out for the rest of the 2021 season.
According to MLB Trade Rumors, Duffy has had a setback in his recovery, which means he might miss a significant amount of time to start the season.
It’s unclear where Duffy will fit into a rotation that already includes Clayton Kershaw, Walker Buehler, and Julio Urias, as well as Dustin May, Tony Gonsolin, and Trevor Bauer, all of whom are doubtful for various reasons. The bullpen seems to be the greatest option for the lefty, despite the fact that there were already three lefties on the 40-man roster at the time of the signing.
Duffy, 33, is a Southern California native who grew up in Goleta and was selected out of Cabrillo High School in Lompoc. He is an 11-year veteran who spent his whole career with Kansas City until last season’s deadline.

Duffy has a 68-68 record, a 3.95 ERA, and 1,048 strikeouts in 1,172 innings thrown heading into 2022. Duffy can be depended on to start at least 20 games and throw roughly 150 innings every season when healthy.
He was a key element of the Royals’ 2015 team, which helped them win their first World Series title in 30 years.
On Tuesday, the Dodgers re-signed right-handed reliever Jimmy Nelson to a one-year agreement that includes a club option for 2023. According to reports, he will be paid $700,000 in the first year and $1.1 million in 2023, including bonuses and incentives.
He’s also coming off a season marred by injuries, including the ill-fated Tommy John surgery. Due to back surgery, he will also miss the full 2020 season with Los Angeles. Injury has been a major factor in Nelson’s career, which has been derailed by major concerns on many occasions.
Nelson began his career as a starter before joining the Dodgers in 2021. His greatest season came in 2017, when he placed ninth in Cy Young votes after pitching 175+ innings and striking out 199 batters.
He had a 1.28 ERA in 28 appearances out of the bullpen, with 44 strikeouts in 29.0 innings worked. Nelson has always had a strong strikeout percentage, but his high walk rate and control concerns have created problems at times.
